Listening To God
I believe that listening prayer is central to our spiritual life. It is the way that we know God’s wisdom and will.
Stilling our minds, emptying ourselves of our agendas and inviting Jesus and the Holy Spirit to reveal Truth is what listening prayer is all about. God will speak to you through scripture, words, pictures and feelings or impressions.
It is God’s promise that He will guide us, Psalm 32:8, “I [God] will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.”
Jesus explained that when He left the earth, He would not leave us alone. John 16:7, “Unless I [Jesus] go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”
Jesus promises that He will respond to our needs. We must take time out from our busy lives to stop and listen to His input. Psalm 91:15, “He [Jesus’ disciples] will call upon me, and I will answer him [them].” and 1 Samuel 3:9, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.”
Words are important! Receiving God’s words through Holy Scripture and through divine revelation in our minds helps us to know how to please God. As it says in the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Our job is to accept the words that God reveals to us. John 17:7-8, “Now they [you and me] know that everything you [Father God] have given to me [Jesus] comes from you. For I [Jesus] gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them.”
What about trying to empty your mind [emptiness], and spend time with the Lord, receiving His peace and listening to His words of Truth. John 16:13, “When he, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.” John 8:32, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Give it all over to Him and seek His peace in your soul.
Mark 9:7, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”
